Changing relationships pre- and post-diagnosis

An awkward scenario I find myself in is when I come in contact with someone who knew me before my diagnosis. Last year I met up with an old classmate, who I had not been in touch with since university. When discussing what we'd been up to, I mentioned the curly hair project, and of course this led to further questions... eventually with me disclosing that I'd been diagnosed as autistic some time after the end of my degree. The young man's response was something like "Oh... ok."

Limitations of the diagnosis process

ASD is a very disabling condition, yet on the outside people can look very competent. Not only may people appear competent on the outside, but the answers they give in their assessments and the way they've been brought up can also contribute to difficulties in diagnosing. Beyond diagnosis – are you still the same person?

This is an interesting question. The answer for me is “yes”, I am still the same person. In my eyes it is that simple, however, I am aware that it may look like I am not. I am the same person but I now have reasons for all the ‘unusual’ feelings and behaviours I have. It was very… Join The Curly Hair Project Community Today This article and our podcasts are available only to members of our community. If you would like to continue to read this article, alon…
