Suggestions for use:
1) Display a card at the front of the class and discuss what’s happening with the pupils
Some of the questions you might ask could be
“What do you think is happening in this situation?”
“How might The Girl With The Curly Hair or another autistic child feel in this situation?”
“Why might they feel this way?”
“If you were a teacher or another child, how could you be kind to The Girl With The Curly Hair?”
2) Give one card to each pupil or one card to a group of pupils
Let them discuss the scene with each other and present their thoughts to the rest of the class
3) Display the cards on a wall in the classroom or a visitor waiting area
Let people think for themselves!
4) Use the cards to engage with one particular child
Maybe you know a child who is struggling because of their autism, or who might be able to identify with some of the scenarios shown on the cards
The cards could be a conversation-starter
“Yes I feel like that too!”
5) Use the cards in a similar way with staff members
Discuss the scenarios with one another to enhance your understanding of autism
You might have autistic pupils or colleagues
The cards can be used to give children and adults an understanding of autism
They can be used to promote an understanding of what it means to think differently
And to make people put themselves in another person’s shoes!
