Why does my autistic child dislike walking to school?

Posted by: alisrowe, January 12, 2026

The journey walking or cycling to and from school can be really stressful for autistic children. In fact, the journey may even be one of the reasons why an autistic child doesn’t want to go to school.

When I was little, I used to dread walking to school. I didn’t fully understand why at the time, but here are some reasons that I now understand:

Hyper-sensitivity to sound or other sensations

Autistic children may feel terrified of the noise of traffic. They may also find sudden, unpredictable noises from dogs or other children unsettling. There are lots of cars and people out and about during the commute time. The chaos can cause them to feel a high degree of anxiety.
