Some people already have a natural sense of when something they have been working on is finished. Many people with ASD however, struggle with this. It is a common autistic trait to be a perfectionist so, of course, that adds to the problem of recognising when something is finished – I am sure NT perfectionists can relate to this too.
Never knowing when something is finished causes a number of problems including: procrastinating because you just want to get it right, never getting anything done, leading to lack of motivation because you have lots of ongoing projects but just never complete them, feeling unfulfilled…
There are some strategies we can implement to help us or our autistic loved one recognise 1) what “finished” means and 2) actually take action to stop what they are doing.
