There is a big challenge involved when people with ASD have friends. Some NTs find it hard to believe that, often one of the most difficult things about having and being a friend, is the keeping in touch part. Sometimes, the meeting up part is actually easier than the keeping/staying in touch process we have to go through in between(!). You can sort of expect that a person with ASD will have challenges communicating and socialising when in person with others but those challenges also extend to the parts where we are not physically even with another person. There are several main reasons for this, shown in the diagram below.
