Autism – a difference or disability?

In the UK autism is a recognised disability. I have noticed that some autistic people don’t consider their autism to be a disability. This interests me as I feel strongly that my autism is a disability, however I can also see why people might think otherwise. What is meant by a disability? A disability is… Join The Curly Hair Project Community Today This article is available only to members of our community. If you would like to continue to read this article, along with re…

What is meant by ASD ‘thought processes’?

On further contemplation about whether ASD is part of my personality or is it separate, I began thinking about my thoughts. I think that what human beings think about is linked to their personality which pushes me even further to conclude that ASD is a part of my personality. Obviously it is a deep complex… Join The Curly Hair Project Community Today This article is available only to members of our community. Another way of looking at “challenging behaviour”

Throughout my life I have found myself in trouble on numerous occasions. I think this is because other people think that my behaviour is strange, naughty or thoughtless and sometimes the things that I do come as a complete surprise to others. But when people look a bit deeper and try to understand me, my behaviour completely makes sense. I’m no longer “difficult” but someone that is very anxious and has quite severe and complex communication difficulties.

Why am I so critical and how to manage it

The most common definition of to criticise is: “to express disapproval of the perceived faults or mistakes of someone or something.” People on the autistic spectrum are often described by other people, as being too critical. Someone who is too critical can be a difficult sort of person to be around. I know that I… Join The Curly Hair Project Community Today This article is available only to members of our community. Unresponsiveness and lack of communication in ASD people

One of the reasons that having friends is hard for me is because I am not very communicative. My friends (before they understood my condition) would contact me but my responses would always be minimal and would not encourage further communication.

What is empathy and do ASD people have a lack of empathy?

I think there is some misunderstanding of what empathy actually is, which I will explore in this article. There are various definitions of empathy but the one that I use and how I think about it is that it's being able to share the feelings of another person.

Is apathy a symptom of an ASD?

This is an interesting topic of discussion! There’s some thinking that people on the autistic spectrum lack emotions. I can say that for me this is true a lot of the time in terms of apathy. Apathy: lack of interest, enthusiasm or concern Apathy may be a symptom of an Autism Spectrum Disorder. If somebody has… Join The Curly Hair Project Community Today This article is available only to members of our community. If you would like to continue to read this article, along w…

Doing the same thing over and over again

I have a little theory which I want to write out! I’ve been thinking about how I experience pleasure. A friend said to me, “I like doing something for the first time, it feels so fresh and is the most enjoyable.” It was an interesting statement and I challenged it. I said, “What about after the… Join The Curly Hair Project Community Today This article is available only to members of our community. If you would like to continue to read this article, alo…

Theories about the sensory system in ASD

Although sensory challenges were not considered to be an aspect of ASD until the most recent diagnostic criteria (DSM-5), I am yet to come across anyone who has a diagnosis who does not have sensory challenges. In fact, many individuals with ASD believe that the challenges they have with their sensory systems are the most… Join The Curly Hair Project Community Today This article is available only to members of our community.
