Smells (animation)

Autistic people can be hypersensitive (oversensitive) to smell. This can make usual day to day experiences very uncomfortable. Shyness in autistic versus neurotypical people

Shyness is feeling nervous, uncomfortable or awkward in social situations. A lot of people used to describe me as "shy", but my experience of being shy seemed different from some of the other shy people I had met. I wondered whether it was because I was autistic that my shyness came across differently and felt different. I created this animated film to suggest how shyness might be different for an autistic person:

A Day in the Reception Class for The Girl With The Curly Hair

I’m excited to release my new film called ‘A Day in the Reception Class for The Girl With The Curly Hair.’  It shows how a 5 year old on the autism spectrum might experience a day at school. It was very interesting to think about how autism might affect a young child. I learned a… Join The Curly Hair Project Community Today This article and our podcasts are available only to members of our community. If you would like to continue to read this article, along with…

The 6 Golden Rules of Managing Sensations (animation)

The majority of situations can cause an autistic person to feel a degree of uncertainty. Even very common situations, such as going on the train or going to a GP appointment, can contain many unpredictable factors, leading to feelings of uncertainty. Neurotypical people don’t tend to worry to the same degree about uncertainty. They might not even feel that situations can have an uncertain outcome. This might be because they naturally have the flexible thinking skills to know what to do should something unexpected happen.

Using masking in order to communicate (animation)

Masking is sometimes the only way that an autistic person will be able to interact with other people. I made an insightful animation to explain this idea. Watch it below:

The Freeze Response (animation)

When something happens that I did not expect, I feel as though I freeze. It feels as though the cogs in my brain have come to a halt! This freezing happens for at least two reasons: 1. I struggle with flexible thinking (a part of executive function), which means it is hard to imagine or work out alternative outcomes to things 2. I feel highly anxious, because something has happened unexpectedly. Remember that to 'freeze' is one of the three primary responses to anxiety (the other two are fight and flight). I created an animation to explain The Freeze Response and to provide a strategy that really helps me to deal with it. You can watch it below. I hope you enjoy it!

The Supercompensation Theory

I came up with the idea of Supercompensation (inspired by a concept in sports science) a long time ago and we recently made it into an animation.

New film – A Day at the Vet’s

We have released a new film which shows a day at work for The Girl With The Curly Hair, who works at a veterinary practice. The Girl With The Curly Hair's manager has made some reasonable adjustments for her, but the rest of the team don't always follow them. This film highlights some of The Girl With The Curly Hair's strengths. In particular, she has two good ideas to make all of their working more efficient. It shows that thinking differently can have advantages.

The 3 ways to connect with someone

I have often wondered why I get on well with some people and why being around others causes stress. When I thought about it, I realised that it was primarily to do with just three things!! I realised that there are three main ways that people can connect with each other and those people who I don't get on with are the ones who don't use any of these ways. I have also made a very good animation to explain this, which you can watch below! The ways can be thought of as levels:
